Abdul Kalam showed interest in becoming the President of India again, but later withdrew from the race when it became clear that he did not have numbers. His image remained intact thanks to quick realization of politics behind announcing his name from nowhere by opportunistic political parties. In his latest book, “ Turning Points – A Journey Through Challenges“, Kalam gives us insight about why he chose to become the President of India in 2002, and the same motivation might have crept in his mind in 2012 for his initial inclination for running for the post again.

The reason he chose to say yes when Vajpayee asked him to become President was to realize his ‘India 2020’ dream by putting forward his vision before the nation and the Parliament. Vision 2020 – that grand vision for India to make it a developed nation by 2020 – is what Kalam breathes, and tries to inspire youth to strive towards achieving this goal. Unfortunately, in this sequel to his earlier book ‘ Wings Of Fire‘ which covered his life till 1992, there is a heavy dose of ‘India 2020 vision’ but less of personal anecdotes.

Because it is said to be his ‘autobiography’ one would certainly have high expectations about life of this great personality who had the opportunity to participate and witness some of the momentous events in India in recent times. From 1992 to 2012 Kalam served nation in various capacities – he was adviser to defence minister, head of some of defence research institutes, national scientific adviser to the Prime Minister, and then the President of India – during which he witnessed India grow from strength to strength from 1992 ignominy of begging IMF to becoming the one of the fastest growing economies in the world. Surely, he had more interesting stories to share from his personal point of view, but he consciously chooses to avoid sharing such events in this book. He also reveals that he declined to be a cabinet minister in Vajpayee’s government in 1998 – which makes it clear that he had unparalleled access to important government functionaries at the time. He was still a scientist at that time, and it is rare for Prime Ministers to ask someone outside from politics to become part of government.

Instead ‘ Turning Points’ is a more of a blueprint for making India a developed country by suggesting measures to make Judiciary, Parliament, and Executive more efficient in their functioning, and quite annoyingly all suggestions are in ‘points’ like in textbooks. For example, there are: ‘ten’ pillars of development; ‘five’ causes of delay in delivering justice by courts and ‘nine’ suggestions to make them efficient; ‘four’ points on meaning of development of villages; and some ‘seventeen’ points for making our Parliament ‘functional’. Kalam is basically a teacher, a patriot and a humble human being. This is reflected copiously in his book. The book reads like a lecture and avoids use of ‘I’ wherever it is possible. This is its handicap.

We miss out ‘autobiography’ of Kalam, and instead read about his vision for India and what measures he took during his presidency to realize some of them – which is already in public domain in the form of numerous and also there is a dedicated for it. When the news was out that Kalam had written his ‘second’ autobiography, the media, both print and electronic mainly focused on two revelations: one, about Rashtrapati Bhavan inviting Sonia Gandhi to form government in 2004 in spite of opposition from many quarters; and second, about his offer of resignation when Supreme court held dissolution of Bihar assembly unconstitutional which he had signed from Moscow.

Also some media covered his withholding of his assent to ‘office of profit ‘ bill which was controversial. It is interesting to note that these events took place during UPA-I rule. Kalam hopes that his book would be inspirational to its readers. But, the book would have been inspirational if it had revealed more about his life rather than his vision which is already known to those who have read his earlier books.

To illustrate how he tries to make his point about use of technology(one of pillars of development) in speeding up decisions, he talks about dissolution of Bihar assembly in 2005 which he did from Moscow at the insistence of PM Dr Singh, through an e-mail! Though the decision was controversial and which led him to offer his resignation after Supreme Court’s ruling, and which ensued an emotional pleading by Dr Singh to save his government by taking back his decision to offer resignation, Kalam ends the episode by saying these words: “ Very few people in the country are using e-governance, which I consider a tool for a borderless world. It is a facility I use liberally in India and abroad.”! He calls Indira Gandhi ‘great stateswoman’; Dr Singh, ‘architect of economic reforms’ with an ‘impeccable image’ and in this way tries to be nice to every political leader he has met in his life. His humility is evident throughout the book and he has made every effort to avoid any controversy that might arise from any revelations. It is strange coincidence that the book was timed at the time of 2012 presidential elections for which his name was also dragged. For those who expect interesting anecdotes on Indian polity or even from Kalam’s own life, the book is a disappointment.

There are few occasions where he narrates stories about his father and brother, but in the end he shares moral lessons he learnt from those incidents – like in Panchtantra. But all the stories are incomplete. ‘Turning Points’ dwells less on turning points, but more on other ‘points’. Nonetheless, book is simple and ‘inspirational’ for those who have not read his earlier works.

Generally it takes place during the month of August and September. Preliminary preparation of the festival starts 15 days before the occasion. Puo-Juntia [ ] It is another fasting puja of similar austerity for women of the area. The Puo-Juntia festival is observed by mothers to invoke the grace of Lord Dutibahana for the long life and prosperity of their sons. Mela at attracts a large numbers of devotees. On the occasion of Makara Jatra, a fair is held at Themra in Sambalpur. Architecture [ ] Sambalpur retains its classic sleepy charm, even in the face of rapid, albeit unplanned expansion and a deluge of retail establishments. Some of the houses along the old part of Sambalpur are still maintained, and used, like they were a century ago. A peculiar way the houses in the older parts of town are arranged is, the gulli system, literally, mazeway. Houses in Patnaikpara, Nandpara, and along the parallel streets of Sansadak and Badsadak are examples of this. The splendour of Odisha's art and architecture reached its climax in the 13th century, much before the advent of the Chauhans into Sambalpur region. The Pataneswari temple of Sambalpur was built by Balaram Dev, the first Chauhan ruler of Sambalpur in the last part of the 16th century. It consists of a sanctum with an enclosed circular count.

The Pataneswari Deity is the temple of the goddess. The Samaleswari temple in the town represents the finest Chauhan style of circumvallation around the sanctum. The image of Samalei is a unique sculpture and appears to be a primitive deity worshipped by the local people. However, Samalei or Samaleswari is the tutelary deity of Chauhan dynasty of this area (Pasayat, 1998, 2003, 2007, 2008). Now that the city is facing modernisation, the development authorities have geared up to transform the city. Tourism [ ] The world famous Hirakud Dam, built in 1956 across the Mahanadi River, about 15 km from Sambalpur, is a major tourist attraction.

It is one of the longest dams in the world, about 16 mi (26 km) in length. It also forms the biggest in, with a reservoir holding 743 km 2 at full capacity with a shoreline of over 640 km.

It also attracts a large number of migratory birds in winter., located about 25 km from Sambalpur, built in the 17th century, leans at an angle of approximately 47 degrees to the west. (Pasayat, 1998, 2003, 2004, 2007, 2008). It is one of a kind in India.

Is the main temple of the goddess, located on the banks of river the Mahanadi. Sambalpur owes its name to her. Chiplima () located about 37 km from Sambalpur, is known for a natural fall (24.38 m in height) harnessed for generating electricity. It is an ideal picnic spot and famous for, the presiding deity of the place. This temple played an important role for river navigation in the past.

The second planetarium of the state is being set up in Sambalpur. The has allocated five acres of land on which the planetarium would be constructed on 2 acres (0.81 ha) of land. Soon after the completion of the planetarium a science park would be set up at the remaining 3 acres (1.2 ha) of land. The construction of the planetarium building which began in 2012 is over and now remains the installation of the devices and machine which would get over soon after which it would be open for the people.The APJ Abdul Kalam Planetarium has already started for the common people. Entry fee of Rs.10/-(as of Nov 2017) to be paid at the entrance gate.

After entering the gate if you want to see the 'Planetarium Show' than you have to pay Rs.30/- for Adults and Rs.20/- for Children(as of Nov 2017) separately after entering the gate. Lost temples of Hirakud Dam [ ] These are remnants of temples submerged after the dam was completed in 1957. In summer, due to the receding water of the dam, the structures become visible. These hidden treasures have finally caught the attention of historians and steps are being taken to understand the historical significance of these temples which periodically go under water, only to resurface again. Many temples have been destroyed after 58 years of underwater existence. However, some remain intact. Interest in these lost temples has been rekindled after two stones, etched with writing ('Shila Lekha'), were recovered from what is believed to be the Padmaseni temple of the submerged Padmapur village.

The temples located inside the reservoir area were part of the then Padmapur, one of the oldest and most populous villages in the region prior to the dam construction. More than 200 temples were submerged by the dam; nearly 150 temples have either perished or are underwater and about 50 are visible during summer.

These lost temples present excellent opportunities for enthusiasts to explore under the Hirakud Dam. These temple are visible to visitors on boats only during the summer months of May and June. Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary [ ] The Debrigarh Wildlife Sanctuary stands out from all the wildlife sanctuaries in the state in terms of sighting wild animals. One of the major reasons for this is its proximity to the Hirakud dam as it provides a perfect water source host for the animals, birds and aquatic fauna of the sanctuary.

Apart from the animals already inhabiting the sanctuary, migratory birds also come to explore the nearly 150 km 2 area of the Hirakud reservoir. As the dam is a standing water body, many varieties of diving ducks can be seen.

The sanctuary may welcome the largest number of diving ducks in winter compared to all the other sanctuaries in. Birds such as the red crested pochard and great crested grebe are seen in large numbers. During 2008 there was a bird census and the sanctuary reported more than 32,000 winged visitors. There are six eco-tourism cottages in the sanctuary at Barkhandia and each has all the facilities to accommodate a complete family or two adults. Most importantly, the tariff includes all meals. Permission for the entry into the sanctuary is available at the gates, but to stay in the eco-tourism cottages one has to get the DFO's permission from the office in Sambalpur town after paying the fees.

Cattle Island [ ] Cattle Island exists in one of the extreme points of Hirakud Reservoir, a natural wonder. It is near Kumarbandh village of Belpahar-Banharpali range which is about 90 km from Sambalpur. The island is a submerged hill, and before the construction of Hirakud Dam it was a developed village. During the resettlement period, villagers left some of their cattle behind; when the dam construction was over, the cattle settled on the hilltop. With the passage of time the nearby area filled up with the reservoir water, turning the hilltop into an island. Being away from mankind, the cattle are now wild, very swift and not easily caught.

Living on a hilltop with dense forest, they are larger than tame cattle, almost all of which are white in colour. Nearby residents attempt to capture these animals from time to time, but these hunts are rarely successful. Though descended from tame cattle, these animals provide a contrasting picture of this breed of animal returning to life in the wild. She is the sister of Late Sriballav Panigrahi who was a former Minister, Parliamentarian and legislator from Western Odisha. Previous MLAs from this seat were Jayanarayan Mishra; Durgashankar Pattanaik of, who won this seat in 1995 and 1990; Sraddhakar Supakar of INC in 1985; Ashwini Kumar Guru of INC (I) in 1980; and Late Dr. Jhasaketan Sahu of in 1977. Sriballav Panigrahi of Indian National Congress represented Sambalpur in the Odisha Lesgislative Assembly in 1971 and 1973. Demand for a separate Kosal State [ ] The demand for a separate State of Kosal is more than two decades old.

A regional political party, Kosal Kranti Dal, has been very active with this demand of a separate state and is the only political party to date supporting this demand. In a new twist the people of Sambalpur rejected the idea of the Kosal state and the Kosli language terms for Western Odisha and language. They expressed their view that the ancient kingdom of Kosal (present day Awadh region of Uttar Pradesh) and kingdom of South Kosal (present day Chhatishgarh) had no history related to Western Odisha, and if a separate state is formed, the state name will be Hirakhand and language will be Sambalpuri. The Hirakhand and Sambalpuri terms are not accepted by Kosal supporters of Balangir. It should be noted that the Kosal state movement is not popular and active in other districts of Western Odisha.
