They started working the yard back in the '70s & '80s when you had early quits. Those are gone. I figured if I had to stay at least 7 1/2 hours might as well stay for as much as you can get. Plus having 2 days off a week was a new experience. Sorry to hear they don't double over anymore. But, that was a trick TM's did to not have to report OT to division HQ & JAX. You must work down south where it's warm. Try coming to buffalo and being forced to work 12 hour days when it's 20° out side wind blowing at 20mph and it's snowing. On top of that sweeping switches of snow, walking in knee deep snow with those heavy anti slip boots.

Then the fuck you with the 20 minute lunches. So basically your out in the cold for about 11 hours. Terminal I worked in if they didn't have anyone on the extra board they would call to see if I wanted to work over. Hell Yeah, another time ticket 4 hours for 8 hours pay at punitive rate. They did that to show no OT. This happened 1-2 times a week. My regular 5 day pusher job it made quite a bit of OT. Name: E-mail: Employed as: APE, for Less than 1 year Posted: 20 December 2017 They call extra jobs all the time off the extraboard in buffalo.

They cut like 5 yard jobs here in the last few months. Then they call the extra at different times and job symbols. They do that cause I believe if they call a extra everyday for 5 days at the same time and job number they have to put it on as as a regular job. Problem in buffalo nobody wants to work the extraboard, it calls for 6 and we usually only have 2 people on it.they could solve that problem by force assigning Jr employees, but mangers here are lazy and don't want to push the issue with crew management. Name: RRJim E-mail: Employed as: Locomotive Engineer, for 30+ years Posted: 19 December 2017 Conductor 10-20 They were micro managing before I retired in 2010. Last 2 years I worked a pusher job that they used for switching etc. When there was no trains to shove. One afternoon we had to switch out a few tracks for a local. A TM came out screwing with the ground crew.

I got off the locomotive went back to see what was happening. He was telling them how to switch. Seeing the conductor only had a little more than a year plus a conductor trainee he had them flustered. We had a job briefing it would take 1 1/2 hours or so to get it done. The TM's way it would of been 4-6 hours. After he left I told them let's do it his way.

It'll never get finished. Let them micro manage.

Everyday we got to work it was no overtime. I made OT just about everyday. If I would of known I could make 60+ hours in a 5 day week in the yard I would of left the road years ago. Name: E-mail: Employed as: Conductor, for 10-20 years Posted: 19 December 2017 I'll tell you how to protect a shove on tracks that are not coupled up. Give him exactly what he wants.

While you're doing it sit there and ask yourself why managers that don't have experience on the ground tell us to do things a specific way? Why can't they just say grab this cut of car and a switch list and go to work? When I take a shit, I know that I have to wipe my ass and I know how to do it. There are at least 6 ways to wipe your ass and they all work.

I can go front to back, back to front, sitting down, standing up, with a combination of toilet paper and wet wipes, and last but not least my favorite, circular motion. We don't need managers to tell us a specific way to railroad when there are a lot of ways that all work. Why not let us pick what works for us and leave us alone? They like to micro manage us, so give them what they want and when it fails maybe their superiors will start to question them. They were doing what he said because they wanted to impress him, and thought they'd get on his good side. Do you think he would have brought them if he didn't have someone he wanted to replace? He just knew they were more obedient, and that's why the others had to go! They weren't Hunter rules compliant. Also correct as to what we have to do now.

There's going to be a lull in operating decisions at first, and that's when we need to band together and let the Hunter managers know now, that the old style railroaders are still here. That they might not want to tangle with wounded t&e brothers. Name: E-mail: Employed as: Conductor, for 10-20 years Posted: 17 December 2017 I'm really hoping everyone is on board with this.

It is time to set our future in our favor. I wouldn't call it bullying, I would say it's just letting everyone know it's our railroad. They don't have anything without us. Let these managers know we're in charge. Tell all your coworkers, get the word out quick!

Lets go brothers! Knock em back a peg while the new plan is developing. I think it's safe to say that the investors might see that things aren't exactly working out, and there's no 'railroading icon' to offend to sway their opinions. It's clearly a day of saying, man, maybe this was a stupid plan, let's make our money back. I believe by Summer, there will be an entirely different agenda, and maybe Foote will make a name for himself by turning things around instead of this psrr failure.

It takes about 48 hours to buy or sell a stock depending on what day of the week it is. If you have 100 shares right now and the stock price is $54.00 and you keep it knowing it will drop to $44.00 because you are in it for the long haul and you know it will bounce back then you are an idiot! Why not sell at $54.00 wait till it hits $44.00 then buy it back? You are such an idiot on this topic, please don't give advice to anyone about investing you moron! My God how can someone be this stupid?

To RRJIM, this part is for you, why are we cutting off our own feet by selling? Should we keep our money in CSX stock knowing it will fail, knowing we will loose our retirement? Why to help CSX stay afloat? Let it fail please, we can all buy back in at record lows and ride the return back to the top. If CSX stock tanks then there would be investors lined up to take over and bring it back to life buy undoing everything from the past year. CSX is an excellent candidate now for a turn around, all that has to be done is revert back to Michael Wards operating plan, or anything similar that involves actually getting and keeping customers. RRJIM, the other guy gets the idiot of the year award but you are a very close runner up.

If you weren't then you know the company has been doing this for years before EHH ever came around. They always find a way to cut ex boards and pools and keep people off the payroll any chance they get especially around the holidays. If you pay attention to the pattern over the years you would see that.

They will cut the extra board and then let the guys who are bumped and cant hold a spot sit there and rot until they decide to create a spot for them. They will make sure they are not available the day before, of or after the holiday so they cant claim holiday pay. They always expect guys to lay off for the holidays so they know they can use a few as they need them. They also know the industries lay in on Christmas holiday and some on New years so they aren't worried about being a few days behind on deliveries.

A lot of industries close down for inventory time at the end of the year to get ready for taxes. They have been doing this for years. They always chop the boards when winter starts. This is nothing new. Every single furloughed guy was called back that was in the greatlakes division.

They came back or they didn't answer their letters or phones. Some moved and didn't leave a forwarding address. Not siding with what EHH did across the system but the manpower shortage this year would have happened anyway.

Foote, Please take the time to check out what everyone is saying about your late friend Hunter on social media. Despite your rosy memories of Ewing, He is/was a VERY HATED man. A lot of the job cuts he made went way beyond what was necessary, a lot of the changes he made were out of malevolence against the working men, and the unions. He had very little regard for the personal harm he caused for so many people, communities, and even our very own customers. I urge you not to follow his path, but instead to be a voice of reason and compassion when dealing with the employees that make this company successful. An army divided is doomed to failure.

This is a problem because it takes the incentive of working hard out. If Sally picks 900 apples a day and Dave picks 200 apples a day then Sally should make a little more per hour, when Dave sees that Sally got a raise the Dave starts to pick more apples to try and get a raise. Sally continues to work hard everyday and one day a supervisor retires so Sally is offer the position, now Dave is upset that he wasn't offered the job and he resents Sally (his new supervisor) Dave out of spite starts damaging apples and only picking 200 apples a day again. Sally fires Dave for being a dipshit! Sally hires a new employee that is a good worker and deserving of the job. The new guy, Bill picks 900 apples a day and gets top pay, all the other workers want top pay so they pick 900 apples a day, now production is at an all time high and they can supply more customers so the business grows and grows and hires and hires. One day a hedge fund is interested in the apple business, it plants a new CEO to implement precision apple picking.

The new CEO turns out to be bananas and goes ape shi* trying to turn around the business by selling all the equipment and closing up orchards. The remaining orchards over time become less and less profitable as employee morale slips. Bill (the new guy that Sally hired) has lost all motivation and starts picking bananas, Sally fires Bill for picking bananas. CSX hears about some idiot working at an apple orchard picking bananas and decides hey that guy would make an excellent Trainmaster. Bill now works at CSX. The post from Other, non-employee, for N/A - can be picked apart line by line & that person ought to do a heck of a lot of research & studying. Name: E-mail: Employed as: APE, for Less than 1 year Posted: 16 December 2017 To RR JIM A lot of employers offer part time and that is a good thing because people sometimes need to go to school or be a mom or dad etc. Some people can't or don't want to work full time. The jobs you are talking about are generally what high school graduates that are just starting out in life take, they are not intended to be careers. If a company offers part time positions would it be fair to give them all the benefits as a full time employee? If part timers got all that then the full timers would want more because they are full time. Economics lesson 1: If Amazon, Walmart, and Sam's Club paid 17 an hour and offered all the benefits you listed then who in the hell would hang on to the back of a garbage truck in the cold and rain for 18-20 an hour?

Who would go obtain $60,000 in college debt and spent 4 years to get a degree to become a mechanic to make 45k a year? Who would work at the railroad? If I could work at Walmart for 17 an hour with full benefits I would be there today.

The list goes on man. If the pay and benefits were great for these jobs then you would pay a lot more for groceries, furniture, clothing, etc. Name: E-mail: Employed as: Conductor, for N/A Posted: 16 December 2017 Name: RRJim E-mail: Employed as: Locomotive Engineer, for 30+ years Posted: 16 December 2017 Yeah, A lot of employers today hire part-timers working them just enough to keep them at part-time status not having to pay for healthcare, vacation pay etc. Amazon, Sam's Club, Walmart etc. It was unions that fought & won vacation days, healthcare, pensions etc.

But once people started believing they didn't need unions by the 90s it all came crashing down. Pensions were replaced with crappy voluntary 401K's subjected to the whim of the stock market, healthcare replaced with voluntary group policies, the list goes on. Most corporations don't pay for any employee benefits anymore.

But, great that employee saved $100 a month by not paying union dues. Name: Retired Now E-mail: Employed as: Conductor, for 30+ years Posted: 16 December 2017 Members' dues cannot be used for political campaign contributions. Only Unions' PAC monies, voluntary donations from members, are used for that purpose. [These donations are in addition to dues payments.] Name: E-mail: Employed as: Other, non-employee, for N/A Posted: 16 December 2017 Plenty of non union jobs get paid vacation Plenty of non union jobs get personal days You choose if you want dailies or straight weeks so it's not like you're getting paid vacation and in addition daily vacation days Any company that requires travel will pay for your lodging Detention time, ok but would we not have it if it weren't for the unions? Annulment pay is good, not too many non union workers get annulled so that's probably why they don't have annulment pay Unions have absolutely zero to do with government regulations The union doesn't get you back when you are fired- the railroad is the only place that I know of where employees are fired on a regular basis, it is set up this way to keep everyone under the company thumb, they know you will probably get back and they want you to come back.

Most employees have a mishap in their 2-5 year mark if they fired everyone when they got in trouble there would be almost no one with more than 5 years of seniority, basically everyone on the railroad would be a new guy. The cost to replace 90% of the employees every 5 years would cripple the railroad so there is no way they could operate like that. Trip rate deadheads, ok good Not sure about non union jobs getting insurance 60-65 after 30 CSX does not match 401k who told you this? Plenty of non union jobs do have a company match 401k Stock award is nice if you earn it which is not easy to do, plenty of non union jobs have company stock options and also profit sharing Now with every perk listed that you think the union got us, imagine if we were non union. Do you think we wouldn't have these perks? Without these who in the hell would put up with the lifestyle of working for the railroad? The railroad could not retain employees without these things.

Would you apply to work at the railroad without any of this? Companies have to offer a decent enough employment package to be able to hire and retain employees.

Now prepare to have your balls blown off. You are in the same union as a lot of other employees that work for other railroads, they have very similar contracts because of the unions. Imagine if there were no unions and each company made their own agreements, in this scenario railroads would actually have to compete for employees. If railroad A, B, and C are hiring and you are looking for work then you would choose the one that has the best benefits right, well if that were railroad A then most people would try to work there. Now Railroad B and C have to offer better incentives to get employees hired and to retain them. I can go on but I think you can figure out how it moves forward from there. I left out holiday pay earlier, plenty of non union jobs get holiday pay but they don't have to submit a claim that will likely get denied due to insufficient information or improper agreement.

The way a lot of non union jobs do their holidays is they are just off for the holiday and they get 8 hrs pay. I guess a lot has changed in the 7 years since I retired. It was confusing especially when the BLE states CSX (H&W only). I still get all correspondence from the BLE-T. I even got a ballot to vote on the national contract seeing I'm a BLE-T lifetime member. I didn't vote that's not my decision anymore. People can say the unions aren't doing anything. After retirement I worked as an outside contractor through a local Manpower for a shortline railroad for 4 1/2 years leasing CSX track that I once ran from 1984-1999.

They're a non-union railroad. There employees make $15-$18 an hour overtime after 40 hours no benefits. They have a group healthcare policy they can join at 100% their expense. The truth became known to me that as an outside contractor doing flagging work for outside contractors like VDOT, fiber optics etc. I made more per hour than they did. That's what a non-union railroad would look like. It's troubling to read people on here thinking they would be better off without a union.

CSX and the other railroads would like to get rid of MOW, Signal Department etc. Hiring outside contractors. One man only on trains is being threatened. The unions are fighting these battles. The national was able to freeze the healthcare premium at current level that covers the employee & family.

Railroads wanted $750 a month for just the employee another $750 to cover the family. They managed to secure wage increases better than most in this country. The list goes on. Now Railroad Retirement is being threatened by the Republican tax bill.
