You could attach a resource to a serial port and read the data and then act on it. What systems do you have (Linux?) Are you good with scripting in Linux perl that attaches to the serial port into which smdr data is streamed. Vbscript, powershell on a windows system that can be attached to a serial port.
Example/discussion You can then have powershell process the data into a DB. Excel file can become large or require file management as part of the processing. Usually a vendor provides for a way to access smdr data.
